Pay and benefits

Our goal at HSBC is to deliver a unique and exceptional experience that energises everyone to perform at their best. Our approach to pay and benefits supports our focus on being a great place to work.

We will reward you responsibly

We’re committed to providing you with competitive total compensation, helping to ensure financial security for all.

The Fair Wage network has certified us as a global living wage employer and we continue to review all wages globally against local living wage benchmarks.

We will recognise you

We offer discretionary variable pay to recognise the performance and behaviours of our colleagues (based on performance against annual and long-term financial and non-financial goals), as well as the opportunity to own HSBC shares.

We recognise colleague success through ‘Target Variable Pay’ for more than 150,000 colleagues in 46 markets. This means our colleagues have clarity and transparency on how we make pay decisions, and the impact of business and individual performance on variable pay.

We will support you to grow

We’re committed to supporting your mental, physical and financial well-being. We enable colleagues to learn from others and shape their own development, with access to a mixture of formal and informal development opportunities. Find out more: learn while you earn.

We encourage our colleagues to talk about their ambitious goals throughout the year with regular performance conversations, so colleagues know how they are doing and how they can improve.

Wellbeing and benefits

The wellbeing of our colleagues is a top priority.

We believe it’s one of the foundations that enables us to achieve our purpose of opening up a world of opportunity. When we feel well, we perform well and are better placed to serve our customers. Which is why we offer a huge range of resources to support the physical, mental, social and financial wellbeing of you and your family. From feeling like you can take time out to nurture your wellbeing, to having an open and supportive conversation or getting professional support when you need it.

We know life is rarely a straight line and it can have unexpected corners. Our four-pillar approach ensures that you’re supported throughout your life and your career at HSBC:

Physical health: We provide comprehensive medical benefits and access to regular health assessments*. We’ll also support you to lead a healthy and active lifestyle, with access to personalised app-driven tools and gyms*.

Mental health: We offer free, confidential 24/7 access to counselling, manager mental health training, and mindfulness apps to help you manage stress. That’s why three out of four colleagues feel comfortable talking to their managers about their mental health – and we ranked #1 global employer in the CCLA Global 100 Mental Health Benchmark.

Financial health: We help you prepare for your future by building retirement savings and giving you the opportunity to invest in HSBC shares**. We provide financial protection such as life insurance, so you have peace of mind. We also provide education tools to help you make the right financial choices.

Social health: We’ll support you to adopt flexible and alternative ways of working, where possible, including working from home and different hours. We give time off for the moments that matter; and have Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) that connect on the subjects that matter to you. That’s why three in four colleagues say they can integrate their work and personal life positively.
